How to Measure Your Child for Kurta Shalwar at Home

Boy wearing a sage green embroidered kurta shalwar with yoke detail by Harisan Wear

The most common worry with buying children's clothes online is size. You cannot try it on, and children do not stand still for a tape measure. The easiest fix is to measure a kameez he already wears instead of measuring him.

What you need

  • A kameez or kurta that fits him well right now
  • A measuring tape in inches
  • A flat surface such as a bed or table

Step 1: Measure the kameez length

Lay the kameez flat and smooth it out. Measure straight down from the top of the shoulder, beside the collar, to the bottom hem. Write the number down in inches. This is the number to compare with the Kameez length column on our product pages.

Step 2: Note the chest

With the kameez still flat, measure across the chest from one underarm seam to the other. Keep this number beside the length. If it sits far from every row in the chart, message us before ordering and we will check it for you.

Step 3: Measure the shalwar if you are buying a waistcoat suit

Our 3 piece suits also list a shalwar length. Measure a shalwar that fits him from the waistband to the ankle hem.

Step 4: Compare with the chart on the product page

Open the product you like and tap Size guide. Find the row whose kameez length is closest to your number. When you select a size on the page, its measurements appear just below the size buttons so you can check them against your notes. The full charts are also in our kurta shalwar size guide and waistcoat suit size guide.

Common mistakes

  • Measuring an old kameez he has outgrown. Use one that fits today.
  • Going by age alone. Age is a guide, length is the measurement.
  • Using his usual size number from another brand. Size numbers are not the same everywhere.

If you get stuck, send us his age, height and the two numbers above on WhatsApp. Then browse kurta shalwar or waistcoat suits with the size already decided.
